Getting to Where You Want to Be - Building The Life You Want


We all seem to have goals and aspirations of where we want to end up; what job we want to be doing; who we want to be; the type of person we want to be with. Whether it is your end goal or stepping stones along the way, how much do you wait for others to help you, and how much initiative are you taking in making these things happen for you? What are you currently doing right now, to get yourself to where you want to be in the future?

People often fall short of their goals for themselves. In looking back, they can often identify the things they regretted not doing; the simple things that would have helped them reach their objectives. In many cases, they will be things like; I couldn’t figure out if it was a good idea, I stayed comfortable, I was worried about what other people would think, I was afraid of failing. What can you do to ensure this doesn’t happen to you?

Here are some things you can do to give yourself the best opportunity to build the life you want:

  • Surround yourself with people you want to be like. Put yourself in the uncomfortable situation of being in rooms where you are not the best or the smartest. Put yourself in an environment where you are required to learn and grow to keep up and you will.

  • Take chances and make mistakes. Mistakes are what help you learn. You can never immediately know something and by making mistakes and working things out on your own, you will find more solutions in the end.

  • Trust your gut. When it is telling you that you absolutely must do something, get out of your head and go with it. It is too easy to talk yourself out of good ideas.

  • Experiment. If something is not working, find a new solution or process to run until you find one that works.

  • Don’t worry about what anyone else thinks. People may be skeptical about your goals but it is because they aren’t theirs. If you think something is a good idea, then chances are it is for you.

  • Do what you enjoy. When you have a passion for what you are doing, all the above will work themselves out.

Everyone always discusses how they rarely regret the things they did, but they do regret the things they didn’t do. Push out of your comfort zone and be uncomfortable. Remember there was a period of time when you didn’t know how to walk or talk and your first attempts at either were likely not home runs. If you evaluated doing these things, the same way you evaluate your options today, chances are you would still be sitting at home in a diaper, sucking on a soother…lol!! Not necessarily the ideal life.

Remember, the difficulty in getting where you want to be lies not in the challenge, but in the decision that you deserve to be your best you.
